Technical means have been designed to prevent and detect such unauthorized use, and there is substantial research in this area. In particular, an important technique to counter unauthorized use and distribution, is by distributing the content encrypted within a secure container, e.g. Cryptolope, which is opened and used only by a trusted software of hardware module . An important technique to detect unauthorized use is by watermarking or fingerprinting a document, to establish ownership or identify source of unauthorized duplications .
All these problems are due to the weak authentication offered by relying only on the secrecy of the charge card number. This motivated the design of schemes that offer better security via the use of digital signatures, such as SET and its predecessors (iKP etc.). Charge per item (`per click`) using 소액결제 정책 i.e. a payment mechanism with smaller delay and fees. Regular readers of this column will attest that I am not a huge fan of monetizing content through advertising. When creators are rewarded solely for the audience size their content gets, they are incentivized to produce material that appeals to the basest of human instincts—that we are shocked and outraged by. The real-time feedback that online advertising provides skews incentives even more, pushing content creators to disregard their creative instincts in favour of material that attracts the most eyeballs or has more stickiness.
In this sense, SET does not provide the non-repudiation one would expect to achieve with digital signatures. It is possible and natural to pay with credit cards over the Web in the same way, i.e. to send the credit card number . However, the risks involved are even higher than for `regular` MOTO transactions, due to the weak security of the Internet, and to the high speed and safety in which the fraudulent purchase attempts may be done.
Another limitation is the small amount levels that are usually transacted by the population at low income levels, referred commonly as micropayments. This leads to high per transaction costs which inhibits the banking infrastructure development in the rural parts. As with any emerging technology, micropayments will have their challenges in being adopted. We learned this ourselves when we recently conducted a community testing program, which allowed users to earn and use cryptocurrency for reading articles on a test website.
Another relevant issue is access control to the content , and there are others. Most newspapers have erected paywalls to ensure that their content is only accessible to those who have paid for it. Medium, which fills up a pot with monthly subscriptions and then divides some of the fees among writers based on traffic and reading time, has seen a similarly lopsided distribution of contributors’ income. The theory behind micropayments promises the creation of a robust middle class of creators online — but there isn’t a single field test that shows such a scenario playing out.
So this is our corporate social responsibility towards the news business. We cannot shun our responsibility because there is no ecosystem available. We feel that the benefits will start coming in a few years down the line when many people have wallets. The transaction on the credit card network – from the acquirer bank to the issuing bank – is the same as with traditional charge card scenarios . In particular, the signature on the payment order is not forwarded to the issuing bank
